There is definitely something about the way this season's episodes are directed/written that feels like they skip the story to just get to the scenes. On one level that's fine for emotional payoff, on the other it always ends up feeling hollow.

I must admit I really liked the new/old characters.

That was a long way to go to answer one question, and I am still waiting for something like coherent motivation for some of what has gone on.

The Prologue teaser makes me think our worst fears might be realized.

On a side note, I am very happy to see these prologue teasers as a nod to the old show. While NuWho still does tend to have something happen setting up the story before the credits, the rushed nature of the show tends to make them a little less off the beaten track. It's nice that for some episodes they film these little scenes an leave them on the web.

Not really sure what to say about this one. It seemed very rushed, despite being a 2 parter, and I am not sure whether what appeared to be some strange moments are actually just screw ups or whether they are things to be settled in part 2.

People seem pretty split on this episode, and I don't think it is just Neil Gaiman-worship/backlash.

He always said he was just a madman with a box. )

So this will be a bit more in depth, both good and bad, concerning my thoughts on episode 2.

Throw it all against the wall. )

Zombie-proof house.

OK. Enough now. Can we move onto a new monster please?

So did Moffat lose a bet with RTD and have to write an episode this sloppy and incoherent or is this just what we have to expect now?

I'll put a spoiler warning in just because I know it is good for for aerynne.

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground. )

Spoiler free version: Some good lines, too little plot.

Hello, Sweetie. No reading, now. Spoilers. )

To sum up - mostly a wait and see. Who sometimes needs a few eps to hit its stride, so I am ok with that.

Yeah, the level of "see the dark savage" that went on with them bugged me. Hell, they even took the vests away for more boobies. That and the way the wedding scene went is probably what's bothering me about that.

Quick, non-spoiler impressions of the first episode.

It looks wonderful. No one looks like what I imagined them, but everyone still looks right.

Something about the way the Targaryan storyline is going is bothering me, but I'm not sure what it is, exactly.

I suspect I am going to *love* Tyrion in this show.

In a discussion at work of the Erdos-Bacon number of Nathalie Portman, I wondered if there was such a number for the life sciences.

A quick look turned up nothing, but perhaps my google-fu is crippled at work?

Arturo Garcia responds to Henry Cavill as Superman with a call for casting Rashida Jones as Lois Lane.

I am sure it shocks you none that I love the idea. Of course, I wanted a Hispanic Peter Parker for the new SpiderMan movie, since the only things that Peter has to be are a nerd, a New Yorker, and deeply attached to his family. There's really no ethnic group that has a monopoly on that.

I also want a black Flash Gordon, as I may have mentioned before, so maybe I just like reboots.

From a very unexpected source, this video makes the case for Riho.

Of course, others might argue for Dragon Dragon

A little late, I know, but then I haven't had access to the internet to get me this for quite some time.

Moffat really does like the 'it's a fairy tale' thing, doesn't he? )

I have to admit, I am liking the Game of Thrones preivews.

Craig Furguson's summation of Doctor Who.

Please note that this summation is given while singing lyrics to the show's theme song (Orbital version) and dancing with puppets.

I always wonder if the fact my gmail gets "Phone India" adds means my account was hacked.

A review of Scott Pilgrim that goes to the issue that is so often the problem in the stories we tell in this culture: "Boys are defined by what they do. Girls are defined by who they go out with."

Which leads to a reminder that there is more than one way to think about things, and that your way may just be a default you picked up. (Not that that makes it wrong.) Do blocks have names, or do streets?

Speaking of assumptions, a sex worker talks about her experience with male sexuality and the fact that just about everyone is messed up about sex, so maybe we should all be more sympathetic to one another.
The more men I talked to, the more sympathetic I felt. I was approaching the biggest epiphany of my life: men had as much anxiety and shame around sex as women did. We were all in this together, and any ideology that couldn’t admit as much was doomed to fail.
.
Therefore, some advice on how not to be an asshole while you're having sex with someone.

I may have to check this blog out.
