OK, so the guy I hired has set up a template/design/plugins for wordpress for my site after forever, many misunderstandings, and a general sense of malaise.

It sucks, but has functionality I like, so I'll worry about making it work by actually having the damn thing up and just posting, who cares what it looks like.

Fine. Great.

He's sent me what appears to be an xml export.

Fine. Great.

So how the hell do I get it on my site? I have an old wordpress install with dreamhost. If I just import this, will it apply all the menus and plugins and what have you? Dreamhost and Wordpress.org are deeply useless in answering this question. (What happens to the posts that are already there? Do they stay?)

I've backed up everything from the old one to the best of my ability, but how I actually get the new bits up is completely opaque to me since documentation is something no one seems to believe in.

Videotron gave me a new phone Saturday.

As of today, it has reverted to French twice, keeps saying I have a inserted a new SD card, and has gone back to doing the "assume I have logged out of all accounts if I go underground" thing that the OS update on the old phone had finally fixed.

At least when we could float the theory that the same field that screws up my technology is what made me attractive to women I had a pleasant fiction to hold on to. :)

Just to inform people. The phone fully de-powered last night, so I can't turn it on at all now.

Until I get some sort of replacement, you can call my skype phone number if you must leave me a message by voice.

This also means facebook is somewhat scuppered, as I cannot access it at work.

I will not have a working cell phone for the foreseeable future.

I am in quite desperate need of a second pair of hands. I cannot move the furniture or build my bed or desk alone, which means I can't really do anything in the new place.

A factory reset of my Nexus One did not fix the problem of it disconnecting from Google and asking me to re-enter passwords for each account if I go underground.

Any other suggestions?

No, not the Blade Runner kind.

I've had my Android phone for a few months now. It's ok, but the fact that it doesn't save passwords really kind of sucks. (I'm sure there is some good security reason for it.) The fact that I have to retype in every password I have if I go into the metro and lose signal makes it pretty useless for things like Twitter, or even email half the time.

Still, I haven't done a hard dig through the app store, so maybe there is something super neat I would like in there.

I probably shouldn't have tried to pull the hard drive out of the old machine and put it in the new one.

So... who was offering to help with these things again?

The theory has been put forth that perhaps ALL my technology has been Secretly Belgian, and this is why I have the relationship with tech that I do.

Onbekend

I stand corrected.

Flemish.

Most of it seems to be in English now, although that is still listed as my number.

Achtung!

So my phone is now in German.
Not in a "Cool! i can change languages way!" but rather in a "I went to the coffee machine, looked at the phone to see if I could find out what my phone number was, and noticed that everything is now in German."

Lovely.

Just for the record, I still have no internet at my place, and appear to have lost my phone.

I returned to a house with no DSL connection. Bell refuses to come look at it until Jan 3, maybe later. As I have no laptop (due to the problem with the charging pin), I will have no internet access not stolen during visits for the next while.

My trip to LA included seeing True Grit, which was fantastic; The Expendables, which was not; and Tron, which was biblical.

I also have a crockpot, but no one took me up on the "teach me something" initiative.

Looks like the laptop can't even be coaxed into taking acknowledging it is plugged in anymore. I guess that moves getting a netbook or some such up to the front since I'm fairly sure repairing the plug connection would be a nightmare and not really worth it.

Anyone have a battery for a Dell InspironD420 they can loan me long enough to dump the data off the thing?

Well, that external that's been rattling since it got kicked over in a modeling shoot is at the "I'm scared to try and recover from it" phase.

It was my archive, which I was planning to transfer and back up, but it has gone very slow, and is making odd rattling noises. (It's not really the "hard click" that Western Digital seemingly is famous for.) Add an occasional I/O error and I think I need to not be the one playing with this now.

So who can recommend a good data recovery company? It's probably at least worth an evaluation on this thing. I don't think there is anything I'd totally beat myself up over losing here, there is enough that it would be worth some time, effort and money to try and save.

Any suggestions on a place?

I sometimes imagine this is the conversation I am having with my technology.

The desktop is working, sort of. The 4 beep code meant RAM, not motherboard, and so there was the pulling out and reseating of the RAM. How I managed not to destroy the delicate-seeming chips... I honestly don't know.

That seemed to fix it, except that now the Linux partition won't boot up at all. (Windows Vista is fine.)

On the Vista boot, Firefox and Chrome won't work - IE is fine.

So I have NO idea what is going on with this machine now.

The plan is just to nurse it along for a week or two until I get a paycheque, a credit card, and buy a machine. (Probably something from NCIX so I can customize it but not build it by hand.)

In other news, rehearsals for both plays continue apace and I remain hopeful for good outcomes on both.

The question of no dsl actually running into the modem has been rendered moot by the fact my desktop has stopped turning on again.

Beep code indicates it is probably a motherboard issue. This is the same as was happening after the move, but that got fixed by cracking the case and re-seating everything. No such luck this time, so I suspect it is a more serious problem and all I did was buy myself some time before.

Of course, I don't get my first paycheque until the 15th, and I have 70 dollars to my name until then, so that's full of suck.

I am now seriously considering (since I don't have time to pick something by careful piecemeal) of going for one of the "we build it for you and it's on sale" bits I can find, with an eye for upgrading. Namely a decent core processor and room to add RAM. (And probably replace the case with an ANTEC when I can.)

It's not ideal, but assembling one from parts will leave me without one for much longer.

That being the case, anyone know a good deal on a machine? Remember I am Canada-bound, so US=centric places may be problematic.

Bell sucks

Somehow, Bell has disconnected me from the dry loop DSL in my place, so I once again have no internet.

However, I do now have a bed set up. (Needed an extra pair of hands to hold wrought iron into place while screwing lug nuts into place.) It's a little low, I may need risers.
lightcastle: Lorelei Castle (Default)
I still have no internet, because the setup wizard for the speedouch modem demands a serial number that is longer than the actual serial number on the machine.

Seems important calls to the US will have to wait a while longer. As will watching the Daily Show.

Well, that didn't last long. New power adapter that actually charged my battery and let me have a real laptop again stopped drawing power. Serves me right for buying generic instead of Dell, I suppose.

Yup, what I needed was to have the left lens of my only pair of glasses pop out.

(Odd, I thought I posted something else earlier today.)
