OK, so the guy I hired has set up a template/design/plugins for wordpress for my site after forever, many misunderstandings, and a general sense of malaise.

It sucks, but has functionality I like, so I'll worry about making it work by actually having the damn thing up and just posting, who cares what it looks like.

Fine. Great.

He's sent me what appears to be an xml export.

Fine. Great.

So how the hell do I get it on my site? I have an old wordpress install with dreamhost. If I just import this, will it apply all the menus and plugins and what have you? Dreamhost and Wordpress.org are deeply useless in answering this question. (What happens to the posts that are already there? Do they stay?)

I've backed up everything from the old one to the best of my ability, but how I actually get the new bits up is completely opaque to me since documentation is something no one seems to believe in.

As many of you know, I have long supported Tilda Swinton as the next Doctor. Having recently seen a photoshop of Hugh Laurie (in full House mode) as The Doctor, I think I need some counter propoganda. Thanks to not-my-facebook-friend Angela, I was pointed to these pictures.

Anyone enough of a Photoshop wizard to get a TARDIS in there and Doctor these up?

The cat-burglar thing is still being negotiated, although finding the elements to clothe her remains tricky. Regardless, the kicker is getting the extra props. I can swing a small flashlight easily enough, but does anyone have something which might pass as night-vision goggles? How about a utility belt of some kind? (I suspect a toolbelt would work in a pinch, but it seems a bit much to buy one for one shoot.)

While the Florida trip was delightful, it did prevent me from gathering the elements of my Halloween costume. Thus I turn to the internet to see if anyone can throw an idea or two my way that might help me piece it together.

The basic concept is The Great White Hunter. I will actually be twisting it about some, but the core is indeed that. I orginally thought something like Commander McBragg or Van Pelt from Jumanji.

Safari Joe would probably also work as a basis.

Obviously, I can go back to Allan Quartermain, I suppose. It does seem there's a bit of spread in the imagery.

Any creative minds have some genius propositions?

In general, if I don't get a response, I:

a) Assume the answer is no/they don't want to answer
b) Assume the answer is yes/they want me to assume it as given

(Yes, obviously, reality is more complex. That's why I am asking for your general assumption here.)

Does anyone have a reasonable facsimile of a shotgun I could borrow this weekend? Pistol would also work. I think I have a line on some swords, so that's covered, but backup never hurts.

Or, I suppose, since I left them unlabeled, left or right? Ignore the background colour, I just couldn't be bothered to try and get rid of it when I stole the images. I'm just asking about the line design.

Does anyone who still bothers reading this have the ability to send me the proper shorthand writing for the word, "nothing"?

So I stumbled across a mouse yesterday.

Still not sure how said creature got in, but old house is old.

Any suggestions on humane ways of removing said entity?

I haven't had much chance to play with my Google+ account, so maybe someone can answer this for me. I understand one can make new circles and name them what they wish.

1) Can a contact be a member of more than one circle?

2) Does a contact see what circles of yours they are on?

(i.e. If I make a circle of Acquaintances called "Marks", can they still be in the Acquaintances circle, and do they see themselves listed as both Acquaintances and Marks?)

A question arose in a discussion among friends a week or so ago and I just remembered to ask you people, since I know many of you deal with SEO. When working for Ictus, I had been told that a site that updates, and is not static, is weighted better for SEO, as something live. Thus having a news stream/blog/etc was better. I was recently told by a friend that she was told that was completely wrong and your front page should be static, because otherwise you are just thought of as new pages constantly and your SEO isn't optimal.

Out of curiousity, does anyone know if either of those is true? I recall SEO being full of people making guesses about what works and having all kinds of semi-mystical alchemy, so who knows that the state of the art is. (And for all I know, there is more than one perfectly acceptable method).

Do any of my more knowledgeable friends know if there is something equivalent to the Comic Book Buyer's Guide for old RPG books? As I have been working my way through the old boxes in the family basement, I have unearthed the majority of my old gaming stuff. While I would like to start up some RPGing again in the future, the vast majority of what is here I will never use. Most of it is probably worth the couple of bucks I would get for it at my FLGS, but some of it may be worth more. Is there a central source I could use as a quick check to at least make a first-pass effort and which are worth a second look? Anyone know?

One of the stories/episodes for the play we're possibly putting together for the Fringe involves family and something resembling the whole idea that people shouldn't raise their own children. I know Plato goes into this some in the Republic (which is what I am riffing off of here). Does anyone know if there's a decent quote connected to it?

For instance, "Who Guards the Guardians?", associated with the problem of the Guardians and the Noble Lie.

Is there one associated with the corruption possible with raising your own children?

The battery on this struggling Dell Latitude D420 has finally given up the ghost. This has resulted in the machine insisting that it can't recognize the AC power adapter and therefore will not charge the battery and may run slower. It also has chosen to randomly shut off with no warning, presumably because it stops recognizing that it is plugged in.

This being the case, I need a laptop. As most of you know, I am without income (and am nursing the savings I have left.)

My current thought process is to get myself a netbook, as I've been thinking one would suit my needs nicely for some time. Last time I researched was a over a year ago, so I am not sure what the current state is. I have friends who have and swear by their EEEPC, HPMinis, and Aspires, so I suspect it is just a matter of finding something with a decent balance of battery life, some power, and a keyboard that isn't so cramped I am completely unable to tolerate it for any length of time. And, of course, price, what with the unemployment and poverty.

I'll search while I can, but given the highly unstable nature of my online access for the next little while, anyone who can point me to some decent side-by-sides of the current situation would receive much gratitude.

I am likely to eventually order a battery for this thing as well. The warranty is long gone and the keys are a bit worn, but overall it is still a decent machine and once it has a battery, keeping it around as a backup might be wise.

Thanks y'all.
