A collection of things I've read/seen over the last little while.

A ranking of Earth-like and habitable worlds we've discovered. This came out before the recent confirmation of Kepler 22b as highly Earth-like.

From a few years back, but since Andrew Sullivan brought up The Bell Curve again, some discussion on what "heritability" means in this context and why g is a statistical myth.

And just in case the whole whitewashing of Akira wasn't enough, it looks like Tom Cruise will play the lead for the adaptation of All You Need is Kill. Because in a novel where one of the three lead characters is not white, you better make that sucker white for the movie. :/

As some of you know, that's pretty much what filming is like all the time.

When that wait is in -13 degree weather, it's pretty annoying.

Nonetheless, I had fun filming this weekend, and Laurie's bold idea to film the wheel of the year will result in further adventures in weather as shooting goes on. Since I am the stranger from the other village, I won't be in all of them anyway. With the first story shot, the characters are getting more depth and background as the actors (almost all amateurs) find reasons to do what they are doing. I remain hopeful the writer will take some of these threads and weave stronger stories out of them.

At least we didn't get hit with any crazy snowstorms while trying to shoot.

Of course, everything took longer than hoped for and I just barely made the 9:30 bus, except that I had to go through security first. I don't know why there were metal detectors and security personnel for the bus, but I had to go through the whole routine: keys and change into the bin, metal detector, check my flask to make sure it was empty and remind me that if it wasn't I wouldn't be allowed on.

That all pushed me to the overflow bus with six other people, and then that bus was canceled so I sat in the bus station for 2 hours and got to go through security again. Just lovely.

I'm exhausted from getting home so late, and still scruffy and unshaved from looking like a desperate traveler whose arrival portends dark things for the village.

An oldie that I forgot to post before - by way of Unqualified Offerings, Any sufficiently advanced physics will be indistinguishable from D&D.
In an effort to understand how molecules and colloidal particles with different symmetries might form structures in glasses and liquids, some physicists decided to study dice of various shapes.
A link to the paper shows that yes, they used D&D dice for their platonic solids

And Southern Beale points out that the movie Bob Roberts predicted the Tea Party movement in 1992. Watch the trailer, it even has the tricorn hats. (Actually, watch the film if you get the chance, it was pretty good if I remember.)

The quick review: Not as intense as the first film, Noomi Rapace is still amazing.

Is anyone I know a member of mubi or The Auteurs? I remember coming across it when writing for Brafton, and thinking it might be interesting.

Not quite the same, but I've heard good things about Jinni as well. (And while it's no NinjaVideo, TV shack seems ok.)

Brought on by a discussion on another blog, I've been thinking about narrative viewpoint and whether I'm just viewing this from a lens of too much male privilege.

Do you assume that in a story you are *meant* to empathize/identify with the main character/protagonist. Please note that I am not saying you *will*. Do you go into a story and when it becomes clear the story is about some central character, assume that you are meant to be identifying with this character somewhat? Or do you think authors/filmmakers do not intend this to be the case?

While people can argue the merits of the actual film, I am terribly fond of re-edited trailers.

Spent much of the day helping Eri pack for her move. Having been the one with an onrushing deadline I know that people actually helping pack and throw stuff out is invaluable to keeping morale up. Lord knows I could have used it.

After running out of boxes and deciding it was time for some wind-down, we put in Repo: The Genetic Opera since she had never seen it. I think she made it about 20 minutes before asking for it to be turned off please so she could put on Fraggle Rock instead.

Went and saw it with Annie. (An excuse to see her again.)

It's not as deeply terrible as one might expect. It's rather disjointed and odd, though, since it relies a lot on people knowing the first. People aren't explained and even the Bella-Edward love story is taken as a given. Since he's barely in the film it becomes kind of hard to understand why she doesn't stay with Jacob, who seems much more interesting. It does seem that they cut out more of his abusive and controlling behaviour, though, so that he at least isn't repulsive.

Sadly, it wasn't horrible enough to give me something to rant about at Too Much tonight.

Trailer for the Clash of the Titans remake. (Continuing the "Let's just recycle everything we were fond of in the 80s" theme of modern TV/Film.)

Note that the scorpion's tail attack acting as a drum beat for the driving rock score. It's delightfully awful.

I just got asked to randomly donate to a romantic comedy that is coming out in 2010. The title is the title of this post. I bought 5 postcards, some of you will be getting them.

I will give further updates as necessary. I just thought the Universe hitting me in the head like that needs acknowledgment.
