Cecil has a short story over at the YA Review Network. It's a sci fi retelling of Little Red Riding Hood called "To Grandmother's House"

No, I have not written it.

However, while mentioning that there is no established mechanism of action for viscosupplementation and that therefore I am tempted to ask a question which is, essentially, "make up an interesting MoA for this, since there is no established clinical proof of one", my coworker piped in with,

"They could make it an epic poem of the battle in the knee. All the cells can have heroes. Behold the hero of the cytokines.

It would be The Cytokinead."

I am such a nerd for wanting this.

So my sister responded to the WSJ opinion piece that set off the #YASaves thing on Twitter here in her role as YA editor for the LA Review of Books

I turn to the grand Internet Mind for some brainstorming about a couple of projects I have worked on.

First: I need to take a picture representing "nothing". I'm mulling a few ideas, but am happy to hear suggestions from people.

Second: Anyone have some good ideas about who I should kill in 1492-1494 Florence for a noir-esque graphic novel? (Yes, this will involve echoes of the Pazzi conspiracy, but won't actually be about it.)

According to an old Michael Moorcock essay, "If I were sitting in a tube train and all the people opposite me were reading Mein Kampf with obvious enjoyment and approval it probably wouldn't disturb me much more than if they were reading Heinlein, Tolkein or Richard Adams."

I stumbled across the essay while glancing at the dust-up about steampunk Charlie Stross set off. (Personally, I always thought steampunk *did* deal with those issues, but maybe I'm thinking of early pieces in the genre or before the genre coalesced and now it is just gears and corsets and costumes.)

I did think the whole side discussion of Hobbits as an Arts and Crafts society was interesting, especially since it strikes me as exactly what a lot of StrowlerCon people wanted their Steampunk to be.

I stumbled across this wonderful series about how to draw in the New York Times. It almost makes me want to learn how to draw. Instead, I will probably just write something for my mother to illustrate.

One of the stories/episodes for the play we're possibly putting together for the Fringe involves family and something resembling the whole idea that people shouldn't raise their own children. I know Plato goes into this some in the Republic (which is what I am riffing off of here). Does anyone know if there's a decent quote connected to it?

For instance, "Who Guards the Guardians?", associated with the problem of the Guardians and the Noble Lie.

Is there one associated with the corruption possible with raising your own children?

Does anyone have a good idea on how I could get some halfway decent Business Cards printed up by Tuesday? I am going to a Montreal Trade Board thing as a member of PWAC and would like to hand out cards.

Note that I have no time to *design* cards, which is an issue to me. (I really do need to find/work with a designer and get that done.) I also should really put up a working facsimile of a website which I don't have time for, either.

Regardless, simple and old-fashioned can work, but I need to print them and get them on fairly short notice. Also, the crushing poverty.

So anyone know a local, sharp printer to recommend? Or an online one I can actually expect to get it done and shipped in time?

Thanks.

So, should I be mad and try to figure out a way to get to Toronto for MagNet? I mean, I obviously can't afford it. (I can't afford to feed myself.) At the same time, now that I am a member of PWAC I do have some discount, and lets face it, networking is never a bad thing.

Thoughts on how to manage cash, time, travel, crash space?

Was that ANOTHER response to a job application I saw in my inbox?

My sister is in town, and as is usual for her, she is sharing her genius with the world! (Well, with the teen and tween world in this case)

Two nights of going out in the company of smart, lovely women of my acquaintance reminds me that this is something I enjoy and should do more of even as I try to refocus on actually charting a path that takes me off of my parents' couch sometime in the near future.

I checked out the Kick Ash comedy show with misskitty_79 Saturday, and will be performing on it the 16th. On the 15th, I will be at the Too Much comedy show - since they have relaunched and one of the bookers was there Saturday.

Tonight I had a lovely dinner with la_lionne, caught up on her life, and have decided I need to do more research on whether Marie Antoinette had numerous lesbian affairs. (This is the sort of thing that happens when having dinner with an English Lit and Gender Studies major.)

January plans include driving practice, actually lining up people for photo shoots (those who want to model or even just be test subjects for makeup, lighting, and costume experimentation are welcome to volunteer), doing proper job hunting, writing that 5-colour silk poem/song/whatever that keeps rattling in my head, connecting with Kyn-mad-arab and company about the Twilight Zone play, and otherwise remembering to be productive.

On a happier note, the next Interfictions piece based on my sister Cecil's story is open for bidding.

The Short Chain of Memory.

The IAF blog also links to an interview with her about her story.

When my mom mentioned there was an interview and they asked if she studied neurobiology I told her that Cecil had to have mentioned that it was dinner conversation at our house.

Sure enough.
"My understanding of neuroscience comes from dinner table conversations and shop talk that my parents have had and still have."

These pieces seem to not be up for auction yet, but are also art pieces based on my sister's story.

I am particularly fond of the hand-bound journal with a synapse for a clasp, but then I might be biased.

The first auction for Interfictions 2 ends soon.

Please note that the awesomely beautiful A Book for Memory, based on my sister's story is one of the items.

The Necklace for Valentines, based on Shira's (shadesong) story is closing up tomorrow.
