As promised elsewhere, a year in pictures.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/lcastellucci/sets/72157632390707121/with/8329204857/

Basically one picture per day on which I took them. (I gave myself some leeway for events crossing midnight.) I did not always pick what I might consider the "best" picture of the day, just the most evocative of things happening.

I think you can't comment on flickr if you aren't a member, so feel free to comment here.

A 4.9? I'm impressed, I didn't think we were going to break 4.

From the concert Wednesday night.

(Yes, the blog is terrible. I eventually paid the guy to just go away. I will hopefully one day have time to experiment with learning enough Wordpress to do something nice to it myself.)

I once had a friend of mine who tends bar tell me that she always treated me well at the bar because I was good at running interference. Namely, in cases where there was a client (almost exclusively male) who was having trouble with respecting the boundaries and personal space of herself or other clients at the bar, I was good at acting as an extra distraction to help keep the pressure off the intended target.

This weekend, after rehearsal, I grabbed a coffee with my friend Kendall on the way to a photo shoot she was doing with a new photographer. Since the old port is often difficult to navigate and she had a big valise of clothing, I walked her to the shoot proper.

The photographer greeted us outside, invited us into his gorgeous Old Port apartment, and explained how he had seen her stuff online, and she needed his "eye, and vision. While I need your youth and colour." Then he offered to go get alcohol.

I turned to Kendall and asked if she wanted me to stay for a bit to keep an eye on Captain Sketch of Sketchytown. I stayed the whole time.

I know there are sketchy "photographers" whose entire goal is to have half-naked women in their house. I just hadn't actually run into one yet.

My reward for the good deed Saturday was carrot ginger soup, nan-bread with garlic, and watching the 1980 Flash Gordon so Kendall could go nuts about the costuming, so I was well recompensed.

It upsets me that I still need to run interference.

Due to the fact I am off to Boston for the weekend after next, I have to pass on a day-long photography workshop I've already bought off of Living Social. My dad can't take it, so I open it up to anyone who might want to take my place? It would be Sunday, Feb 12.

Since I am apparently looking all Claude Rains-esque (or at least "WWII Black and White Film") with the Movember mustache, anyone interested in helping me set up a vintage film photo shoot?

The cat-burglar thing is still being negotiated, although finding the elements to clothe her remains tricky. Regardless, the kicker is getting the extra props. I can swing a small flashlight easily enough, but does anyone have something which might pass as night-vision goggles? How about a utility belt of some kind? (I suspect a toolbelt would work in a pinch, but it seems a bit much to buy one for one shoot.)

Catburgler

Does anyone have a good idea for putting together a catburgler costume?

So someone pointed me to this video.

Anyone know a shelter in Montreal/Verdun that I might volunteer to help?

My co-worker wants me to shoot her wedding. Or at the very least, to put a bid in so she can decide. I know some of you have paid for such and/or engaged yourself as such. Any thoughts on a ballpark? This would include an album at the end and all, although I could just give her a CD and let her find a place that makes albums out of it.

Unsurprisingly, part of me is hesitant as this is the kind of thing people are REALLY attached to and you pretty much only have one shot at it.

Moving Day

I am quite tired, so no elaborate moving stories. Those of you on facebook saw most of it in real time anyway.

+ The movers were prompt, efficient, and even a bit snarky.

- The place had not really been cleaned.

+ I inherited furniture and plates and wine glasses.

- It is possible it has bedbugs.

+ The Landlord already knew of the infestation next door and arranged to spray today. (Hoping to make it before I moved in, but that part didn`t work out.)

- Have to avoid the spray and so am crashing elsewhere.

So now I need to dig up the apartment planning software misskitty79 sent me and see if I can lay out my new digs some. Tomorrow will be the first real unpacking and moving of furniture.

The day did end on a good note, however, due to a phone call.

She: "Would you like to be our official photographer next season?"
Me: "Why yes, yes I would."

(Note: I did not do the Photoshop here, it was done by a friend of Maery's.)

Due to my place being tiny, having a houseguest means the couch has been displaced in such a way as to make working on the computer very difficult. Still, despite the inconvenience, it is nice to have her around, fretting about her costumes for her week long rave and complaining that her fangs won't stay in.

She also will grumpily stay still for a couple of shots instead of walking out of frame like above. )

So while the birthday picnic seems increasingly unlikely, at least next week I do have a photo job. The Ensemble Contemporain de Montreal+ has the first presentation of Les Cinq As on Wednesday the 4th.

Since they ended up using some of the photos I took of last year's Madame Merveille (the comic book opera based on my sister's libretto), they offered to hire me to shoot this performance. I'm excited to actually have a reason to rent a lens and try something new. (The rental will probably eat up my entire fee, but that's ok.)

For those interested in going and trying some contemporary music, I have some discount coupons.:

I turn to the grand Internet Mind for some brainstorming about a couple of projects I have worked on.

First: I need to take a picture representing "nothing". I'm mulling a few ideas, but am happy to hear suggestions from people.

Second: Anyone have some good ideas about who I should kill in 1492-1494 Florence for a noir-esque graphic novel? (Yes, this will involve echoes of the Pazzi conspiracy, but won't actually be about it.)

So do I get to graduate from "Guy with camera" to "Photographer" with my first payment?
lightcastle: Lorelei Castle (Default)
My very first photoshoot for which I am being paid was last weekend.

The subject is reviewing the pics now, her sister will review them this weekend.

I am surprised at just how nervous I actually am about this.
