Stairway to Gilligan's Island

In an alternate universe, The Beatles performed Stairway to Heaven

And, finally, the original lyrics to the Star Trek theme.

Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flught
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.

I should really post this tomorrow, but it came up at work.

Can't help but think of that seeing this video. (Although I suppose it could be a more direct Princess Tamatori reference.)

I am going to be all over this album, as will shock people entirely none.

Thanks to Cecil for tipping me off to its existence.

I am extremely pleased to hear that there is a cover (and a damn lovely one) of "I'm Going to Go Back There Some Day", which is my favourite Muppet song, despite virtually no one else remembering it.

But yes, given that I love Muppets and I love cover songs, this is so on the must have list for me.

is that while they are fine musicians they are overcome with weird compulsions to send you things like this, because it is stuck in their head.

The official video of the delightful SJ Tucker singing a song about D&D for all the geeks we are and love.

So my co-worker's album launch was last night, and quite the success I'm told. (I was waiting on my houseguest and so didn't go.)

You can listen to it here. It's been described as "70s AM Radio"-ish, and while I think that's not quite right, there is a touch of Steely Dan in there maybe?

I prefer the description, "nervy nouveau new wave nabobs with a dance floor fixation"

I'm terribly fond of You're Always Wrong, but Saber Rattling seems to be the "catchy" one people are talking about.

So while the birthday picnic seems increasingly unlikely, at least next week I do have a photo job. The Ensemble Contemporain de Montreal+ has the first presentation of Les Cinq As on Wednesday the 4th.

Since they ended up using some of the photos I took of last year's Madame Merveille (the comic book opera based on my sister's libretto), they offered to hire me to shoot this performance. I'm excited to actually have a reason to rent a lens and try something new. (The rental will probably eat up my entire fee, but that's ok.)

For those interested in going and trying some contemporary music, I have some discount coupons.:

I went to the Melissa Auf der Maur show at La Tulipe last night.

It was part of the Festival Voix D'Ameriques. It was great (as one would expect) although you know I am likely to be fond of any piece that references Joseph Campbell, David Lynch, and a duet with a disembodied Danzig.

I tried getting pictures, but anyone who has taken a stab at concert photography knows how hard it is to get decent angles and decent light.

I'll try to put up some shots of "In the Pines" later. They were the opening act - a folksong project based on the poetry of Alice Notley, and very interesting.

OK, it's a MySpace site, but that's perfectly legitimate for a ban.

First You Get the Sugar even has some streaming tracks if you go.

Annie Lennox did a holiday album???

I really should find excuses to get out and dance more often. The office party sufficed, and it's never bad when the singer from the band comes off the stage after the set and kisses you, saying how much she loved the energy you brought to the show.

Does anyone else think that the opening to Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads sounds uncomfortably like the opening to the Fraggle Rock theme song?

Shamelessly yoinked from aerynne, anyone who listens to NPR should appreciate this song:

These are apropos of nothing lyrics that I heard while on random Grooveshark over the last few days, and I looked up the songs. It was a weird run of "angsty love/heartbreak/we are all damaged" songs. Having them in a row like that struck me, so I hunted the lyrics.

Oh, the ANGST! )

Emo is old

That the kind of lyric people associate with Emo is far older than the "Emo" movement is something Eri often mentions. I believe her example of choice is I am a Rock.

Having just heard Hank Williams' I'm Free At Last, I will put that in as an option.

Strange as it seems, somehow I love you yet
Don't say you care, you know that you'll be lying
Don't hurt me more, show my heart some respect.
