The Doctor goes back to the Old West for the first time in almost half a century... it never really does work out for him, does it?

Only draw if you like spoilers, pilgrim. )
In the end it was a nicely structured story but felt terribly flat. I can't really say much more about it. It passed the time. I even forgot I hadn't reviewed it yet, it was that ephemeral.

And just like that I am reminded why I like this show.

If you do it right, it can be cracking great fun.

I'll try to keep spoiler free, but no promises. )

If Asylum of the Daleks was just the outlier of trying to hard to be "big" and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship is going to be representative of the new "no story arcs" approach, this may be a fine season after all.

The seventh series of Doctor Who arrives with the return of the Ponds, a Parliament of Daleks, and a quick demonstration that Moffatt has no intention to change the style or tone he has brought to the show for his two years in charge.

Luckily, that kept my expectations low.

More than a few spoilers within. )

All in all a weak start that doesn't bode well for the rest of the series and implies the slap-dash storytelling Moffat's run has become known for will continue. The "Everyone thinks the Doctor is Dead" bit looks like it will be remembered when convenient, if at all, although I can see some arguing that the closing scene with the Daleks is actually a hint that the whole "First Question" thing will be a story arc this season despite our fervent hopes.

Still, the next episode has dinosaurs on a spaceship, so that might be fun.

As many of you know, I have long supported Tilda Swinton as the next Doctor. Having recently seen a photoshop of Hugh Laurie (in full House mode) as The Doctor, I think I need some counter propoganda. Thanks to not-my-facebook-friend Angela, I was pointed to these pictures.

Anyone enough of a Photoshop wizard to get a TARDIS in there and Doctor these up?

The Oatmeal grammar tag is full of fun things, even if many are usage and vocabulary, but not grammar. (I know, I'm losing this jargon fight. I do think we will need to brainstorm up a new word to mean "grammar" since we're losing the one we have.)

More in the we humans may actually be wired to be nice file.

At some point, the rules on academic publishing and access are going to have to change.

Merril Perlman clears up some usage I have always wondered about.

Something improvised as a temporary fix is “jury-rigged.” First used in the seventeenth century, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, “jury-rig” is a nautical term, not a legal one. A temporary mast to replace one that has broken is a “jury mast”; attaching any rigging to that is “jury-rigging.”

Something that is “jerry-built,” though, is shoddily built, usually out of inferior materials. The OED traces that phrase to 1869. (It’s not “gerry-built,” unless the builder is named Gerry.) The temporary “doughnut” tire that most cars carry these days would be a “jury-rigged” solution to a blowout; let’s hope it wasn’t “jerry-built,” too.

To be fair, things can be “jury-rigged” and “jerry-built,” meaning temporary and lousy, and it’s sometimes hard to tell the difference.

Whether you want to fine tune your interpretation as the Golden Rule, the Silver Rule, or the Platinum rule, it's still pretty much Rule #1 - Stop Being a Dick to People.

All "Top X" lists are debatable, but that's a pretty fine ensemble Den of Geek has assembled for Cult Film Actors.

Not me, in case you were worried.

It is, however, my friend, tattoo artist, model, muse, and interior decorator, the awesome Maery Contrary - a.k.a. Kessel Run.

I was particularly impressed by her deft handling of the "Star Wars or Lord of the Rings" gotcha question.

As I mentioned, I spent some of the time at PhilCon collecting Doctors to stand by the TARDIS corset.

As you do.

At around 10:30 Friday night, I decided to go to Philadelphia to see s00j in what I believed to be her last concert of 2011.

I bundled some things together and grabbed the red eye bus down south.

At 1:30 pm Saturday, I arrived at PhilCon, where I was greeted by shadesong.

At 2pm, I showed up at s00j's autograph table and pointed out I had nothing for her to sign. I do think the look of slight incredulity at my presence was kind of worth it. We determined that I see her in the fall, because that is when my s00j is in alignment. Now we have a story, which means now there are rules.

Her performance, accompanied by the superb Heather Dale, was tremendous.

I then spent the night party hopping to keep awake, smooched the cute geek girl who speaks 5 languages (as you do), and left the hotel at 6:30 am to head back to Montreal, crawling into my apartment at 8pm.

I violated horsetraveller's rule, but sometimes the point is that one did the journey.

Overall, however, PhilCon seemed pretty stale. I did enjoy shooting Jedi, however, and got to kidnap Doctors and make them pose next to the TARDIS corset, so there was definitely fun to be had.

* William Shatner is not a very good documentarist.
* The film was fun anyway as an obvious labour of love.
* I may have developed a crush on Kate Mulgrew after years of disliking Voyager.
* Avery Brooks reminds me uncannily of Brother Blue, who I had the honour of storytelling with during my time in the greater Boston area.
* In one of the time points he was interviewed at, Patrick Stewart looked very frail. In the other not. He was fascinating in both.
* Scott Bakula looks fantastic now that he's embraced his aging.
* I think Shatner is trying to overcome his misogyny, but his very mode of expressing that is uncomfortable.

Since the anarchist Tintin and the gender-swapped Asterix came up at work this morning, does anyone know if there is any gender-swapped Tintin anywhere? It strikes me as one that would be interesting to see.

(I'd also love to see a good gender-swapped Corto Maltese picture, because I think it would be an awesome look.)

That may well be the worst episode of Doctor Who I have ever seen.

It would be nice if you looked where you were going in the metro and didn't kick over the bag that had my made-from-scratch tomato sauce in it, assholes.

Craig and the Doctor meet up again to remind us that we can't run from who we are.

This is where I talk about the episode and give praise to Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All. )

So frothy and sort of fun, but really feels like filler before the final ep, and surprisingly not giving us a two-part finale.

And here's where I talk about what I think is going on with Moffat's clever little puzzle box. )

As most of you know, I have not been thrilled with this series so far. I think a great deal of that may have to do with the arc, which I'm not impressed with. This may explain why I seem to be enjoying the stand alone episodes like this one as much as I am.

I have been most lax about reviewing the second have of Series 6 of Doctor Who (not to be confused with Season 6 of Doctor Who). Some of it has been workload, some has been lack of inspiration, but nonetheless, one must do what one must do.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then let us begin. )

Wait, is it really the 45th anniversary of Star Trek's first episode?

After briefly playing with the generator at work, I figured I wasn't easily MLP'd. Melebeth proved me wrong.

There is definitely something about the way this season's episodes are directed/written that feels like they skip the story to just get to the scenes. On one level that's fine for emotional payoff, on the other it always ends up feeling hollow.

I must admit I really liked the new/old characters.

That was a long way to go to answer one question, and I am still waiting for something like coherent motivation for some of what has gone on.

The Prologue teaser makes me think our worst fears might be realized.

On a side note, I am very happy to see these prologue teasers as a nod to the old show. While NuWho still does tend to have something happen setting up the story before the credits, the rushed nature of the show tends to make them a little less off the beaten track. It's nice that for some episodes they film these little scenes an leave them on the web.

Although I am saddened to find that someone is doing a Flash Gordon movie (and I doubt very much it will tackle some of the problematic racism in any interesting way), such thoughts always remind me of the gloriously camp 1980 version which has a ridiculously good cast in many supporting roles.

I present for your nostalgia, the wedding of Ming the Merciless and the Earthling Dale Arden

Zogi, the High Priest:
Do you, Ming the Merciless, Ruler of the Universe, take this Earthling Dale Arden, to be your Empress of the Hour?

The Emperor Ming:
Of the hour, yes.

Zogi, the High Priest:
Do you promise to use her as you will?

The Emperor Ming:
Certainly!

Zogi, the High Priest:

Not to blast her into space?
[Ming glares at Zogi]
Uh, until such time as you grow weary of her.

The Emperor Ming: I do.

Dale Arden: I do NOT!

Not really sure what to say about this one. It seemed very rushed, despite being a 2 parter, and I am not sure whether what appeared to be some strange moments are actually just screw ups or whether they are things to be settled in part 2.
