Weekend follies, plus practical questions
Sep. 18th, 2011 04:06 pmNot feeling great right now, but worst seems to have passed.
Photoshoot went well, although it is clear that my improvised backdrops are too narrow. I am going to have to buy a second round and reposition the curtain rod (probably buy another) to stretch over the whole back wall.
I need to talk to Miche about casters for the couch so I can roll it more easily if I do this. In general, I think I need to throw a "put things away and on the walls and hammer" party. This is the kind of thing that can get done in an afternoon with help, but will just not get done if I'm alone. Bribing people with alcohol and food afterwards might work.
On the technology front, I want to pick up some sort of laptop-esque thing before work sends me to Florida in October. I really only want it to write and surf the net on, mostly, which is why I keep thinking netbook. There's not much point in me going bigger unless I am going to start bringing it to shoots and editing on it, and that seems like overkill right now. I'm not even sure I need a cutting edge dual-core netbook, since that may be overpowered. Some have recommended iPad and buying a keyboard, but that seems vastly less portable or useful. That said, I came across the Asus Transformer tablet/keyboard dock combination and it is tempting. I am unsure of how compatible Android is as an OS with anything else, though. I suspect it might be difficult to sync documents and things between that and a desktop if I choose to use it.

Or, perhaps, that iron stove was really heavy.
Of course, since I was getting a silly deal on a piece from my friend's garage sale, I had to help him close up. (Especially since he was helping carry it up the stairs.)
I therefore moved a dresser, a small metal bed, some boxes of books, the crate full of steel shelving material, two tables, and the stove. (At least only one other thing had to go up a flight of stairs.)
My arms hurt now.
I did, however, get a free curtain rod to possible create my backdrop idea with, have an in on some possible lighting, scored a suspendable mosquito net (which will either become a canopy for the bed or a shooting tent), and got a wireless USB keyboard and mouse out of the deal.
So not too bad, all in all.

Some furniture moved, the bed built (although I somehow screwed the dimensions up and had to fit it in the room another way) and only the desk as `must be put together from pieces` left.
I do need to put up and perhaps create new shelves, along with finding a bath mat so I don`t break my neck in that clawfoot tub. I have this urge to transform my bed into a canopy now, though, with it dominating the center of the room as it does.

People-Eating Couch
Jun. 28th, 2011 12:40 amIn Boston, Melebeth was kind enough to lend me a cheap portable couch that folded out into something resembling a bed. It became semi-legendary as the people-eating couch, as it had no real structure and just sort of collapsed around you.
Today, I dropped by my new place to pick up the keys and make sure all was copacetic. It turns out the old tenant left some things. One of them appears to be the people-eating couch, which I thought I had left on the curb in Boston for people to take.
It's a good thing I am not the type to read messages and stories into things...

Packing is Dangerous
Jun. 26th, 2011 05:41 pmSometimes, when packing, you get into a rhythm. Items show up, get stuffed in boxes, sealed away and on you move to the next item. Most are somewhat organized by room, or classification. All is well. But there are stragglers, both items that didn't fit in other boxes and items that would just fit in this box here in front of you, making more efficient use of space.
Why is that charger there? you think, having already packed the wires and power cords. Doesn't matter, it can fit in this corner of an unrelated box.
Proud of yourself, you move on, and your apartment at the end of the day is an infestation of boxes, but at least it means you are ahead of the game.
And that's when you realize that stray charger was for your cell phone, and you have no idea what box it got shoved into as a space-filler.

Packing is boring
Jun. 25th, 2011 06:46 pmAt the same time, there is a certain pleasure to the Tetrising of it all. (I could fit THAT in THERE and turn it like THIS -- PERFECT!)
Mind you, I am no Cairril, whose amazing Goaty Goodness as a Capricorn once found about 2 cubic meters more room in a duffel bag I was convinced had been stuffed to the brim. (I believe I still have that duffel bag.)

Raid my stuff
May. 30th, 2011 07:59 amAs most of you know, I am moving in a month. As an ex of mine once said, "Three moves are as good as a fire," and while that might be a touch exaggerated, it is always an opportunity to declutter somewhat. Since packing is inherently boring, so company is always welcome and the bait is a chance to pilfer things of mine you may covet. There is no better time to convince me to give you something than when I am dealing with the inconvenience of packing it, so anyone who wants to make a pitch for something might want to make their move now.
Oh, you'll probably get fed, too, you know.

Time to go
Mar. 28th, 2011 08:56 pmSo it is official, I will be leaving this apartment. I have a month to confirm that, but I should just probably warn them ASAP.
So, once again, I'm looking for a place. I'd like a 4 1/2 if possible, although a 3 1/2 is ok with decent storage and layout. I'd like not to go past $750, but am flexible for something lovely.
Near enough to public transport to make it worth my while, but otherwise flexible about what section of town. Am open to NDG down to Verdun, just because it seems I know more people there and it isn't like I'm hip enough for the Plateau anyways.
So keep your eyes out and if you know something, cool.
I am looking to not have a roommate, but have not ruled it out if it means a great place and someone cool.
Side note - yes, the lightcastle.net email is down. Hosting stopped while I was fighting with the bank and I will renew when I get the credit card. Then I will actually follow through and put up a site proper.

Things I Need
Sep. 21st, 2010 07:30 pmOne of the persistent problems with living alone is that so many things require two hands. Also, since the bank won't even give me a secured credit card due to my destroyed credit score, my room to maneuver is somewhat constrained.
Given all that, here are some things I need:
- Someone to help me move my bed.
- Shelves
- Someone to help me put up shelves
- Computer desk
- Curtain rods to hang backdrops.
- Someone to help put up curtain rods
