The Doctor goes back to the Old West for the first time in almost half a century... it never really does work out for him, does it?
I liked the concept of this episode but it really did feel far too rushed. It's the kind of story that might have benefited from the more leisurely pace of the old series. The moral dilemma of the Alien Doctor vs the Alien Gunslinger didn't resonate because we didn't have enough time to adopt him into our hearts. We have to take Marshall Isaac's word for his goodness, and it isn't enough. (It's a bit like the fact that we tend to only see Rory as a wet blanket nice guy, only having Amy's word for him being awesome. We can buy it, but it lacks emotional heft.)
I'm not too fond of the return of "The Dark Doctor" in the last couple of episodes. I don't appreciate the Doctor as casual killer, even a righteous one. I was hoping that last year's disastrous attempt down those lines would have gotten it out of Moffatt's system.
In the end it was a nicely structured story but felt terribly flat. I can't really say much more about it. It passed the time. I even forgot I hadn't reviewed it yet, it was that ephemeral.
