A Canadian Prayer
Feb. 28th, 2010 03:53 pmFrom my friend Sam:
"Our Father, who art in Canada, hockey be thy name, thy will be done. GOLD to be WON on ICE as well as IN THE STANDS, give us this day, our hockey sticks and forgive us our penalties, as we forgive those who cross check against us. Lead us not into elimination but deliver us to victory, in the name of the fans, CANADA and the HOLY PUCK. AMEN!!"

Rivarly Day
Feb. 21st, 2010 12:00 pmAs a good Canadian, I am probably obligated to pay attention to Olympic Hockey today as it is the final set of Men's round-robin matches, each containing the top two teams in their group, and each consisting of a classic rivalry both on and off the ice.
Did I also mention it is a chronological rematch of the last three gold-medal games?
- Czech Republic v Russian Federation (Rematch of the 1998 Gold medal game won by the Czechs 1-0.)
- Canada v United States of America (Rematch of the 2002 Gold medal game won by Canada 5-2)
- Sweden v Finland (Rematch of the 2006 Gold medal game won by Sweden 3-2.)
Add in that all these pairings have at least one incident of invasion in their past (some more recent than others) and there is even a non-hockey element.

One hundred years ago today, in the aftermath of a fight over money, le Club de Hockey Canadien (aka The Habs, La Sainte-Flanelle, Le Tricolore, Les Glorieux (or Nos Glorieux), and The Montreal Canadiens)was formed. They may never rise to the glorious heights they once had - and certainly won't this season - but until the recent Yankees resurgence, they were the most successful team in any of the 4 major North American sports.
They are a part of the national heritage. Note that a passage from a short story about wanting a team sweater is on the Canadian 5 dollar bill design from 2002.
Sadly, they will almost certainly be defeated in a humiliating fashion by their long-time rivals, The Boston Bruins, tonight in their 100th anniversary game.
