As a good Canadian, I am probably obligated to pay attention to Olympic Hockey today as it is the final set of Men's round-robin matches, each containing the top two teams in their group, and each consisting of a classic rivalry both on and off the ice.
Did I also mention it is a chronological rematch of the last three gold-medal games?
- Czech Republic v Russian Federation (Rematch of the 1998 Gold medal game won by the Czechs 1-0.)
- Canada v United States of America (Rematch of the 2002 Gold medal game won by Canada 5-2)
- Sweden v Finland (Rematch of the 2006 Gold medal game won by Sweden 3-2.)
Add in that all these pairings have at least one incident of invasion in their past (some more recent than others) and there is even a non-hockey element.
