I still have no internet, because the setup wizard for the speedouch modem demands a serial number that is longer than the actual serial number on the machine.

Seems important calls to the US will have to wait a while longer. As will watching the Daily Show.

are you also using a router? if so you shouldn't be doing any setup on the modem itself...

Haven't found a router yet. (May have one in Maery's garage, and don't feel like just buying one on a whim while I have $111 dollars to my name.)

Since the desktop won't turn on anymore, I was trying to configure it with the laptop. Ran the windows install/setup disk and it insisted on a serial number of the form CPxxyyzzz (cc) except that the actual machine doesn't have any numbers in parentheses.
