For those of you who aren't Doctor Who fans, that doesn't mean much, but he was a stalwart of the old show. The Guardian obit above, and this one from The Doctor Who News Page capture his importance to the show. The Brigadier was one of the few constants, appearing throughout the bulk of the classic run and referenced in NuWho.
I was always fond of the Brig, as he managed to be both a moral foil for the Doctor's pacifism and a moral check on the Doctor's alien cruelty. He was a decent chap, unflappable in the face of any foe, often outmatched, but firm in his duty to try and protect the world he lived in.
In the end, this clip (from what was originally written to be his death scene) sums him up as well as anything.

Destroyer: Pitiful. Can this world do no better than you as their champion?
Brigadier: Probably.
(shoots The Destroyer five times with silver bullets)
Brigadier: I just do the best I can.
(shoots one last time, killing the Destroyer)
