So, should I be mad and try to figure out a way to get to Toronto for MagNet? I mean, I obviously can't afford it. (I can't afford to feed myself.) At the same time, now that I am a member of PWAC I do have some discount, and lets face it, networking is never a bad thing.

Thoughts on how to manage cash, time, travel, crash space?

I spent the afternoon feeling like the world is overexposed and sending out subtle unconscious signals of sexual excitation to everyone.

A miscommunication with the placement agency means I may have missed my shot at the job they had. Honestly, I don't think I have the French for it, anyway, sadly.

I applied to a job that yesterday that wouldn't pay very well but could be great fun. I hope I hear back from them. The whole "We don't even bother to respond" thing is kind of annoying.

And it seems I am, officially, a Professional Writer according to PWAC.

First - Seems that the endless snag to get the legal papers in order for PTSD.org to become a real job are continuing. Very frustrating.

Second - A shame that the only thing business-like about me is how hot I look in a suit.

Third - A friend of mine has become enmeshed in the old cultural appropriation debate. As many of you know, I firmly believe that we wouldn't HAVE human culture if we didn't borrow/steal/appropriate from each other all the time. At the same time, I cannot ignore the douchebaggotry of things like hipsters all excited to "play Indian" with their fashion. My current theory is primarily that if your explanation when called out is "shut up! It's fun fashion things!" then you are a douchebag and should be shunned. Outside of that clear line, I don't have a good explanation of why some things piss me off than others other than they are twigging some instinctive line of respect and power dynamics that makes me irritable.

Not necessarily in that order.

The interview this morning went well, I thought. It's not a "I will crush people to get this job" level job, but it does seem solid and interesting and with a good group.

If I do end up back in Boston, I will have to return to stand up. I went to Improv Boston last night with K_____ and am willing to bet that unprepared and unrehearsed, I would have blown everyone on stage out of the water with the possible exception of the headliner.

Unrelated, but following on my theme of loving covers of songs - Don't Stand So Close To Me Young Girl.

Some random pretty computer art.

So, who can put me up in Boston/Cambridge/Somerville (or Davis-square accessible) next week for at least one night so I can do an interview?

(Interview not yet scheduled, so dates are somewhat flexible.)

Was that ANOTHER response to a job application I saw in my inbox?

Dear lord. I have one tomorrow. A writing position no less.
Well, that's something positive at least.

$5 Fridays

A really interesting idea from Johnathan at A Tiny Revolution, Five Dollar Fridays

Starting today, every Friday I'm going to give five dollars to someone who's produced something funny/interesting/worthwhile and is giving it away on the internet(s).
Obviously the internet is the greatest distribution technology ever created for music and writing and video and journalism. But it's also obvious it generally makes it more difficult for people producing such things to earn a living.

So I have three goals with this:

1. Finally start paying some of the people who've created wonderful things I've enjoyed.

2. If possible, get lots of other people online to start doing this as well. It would be a beautiful thing if it grew and grew, and three years from now 10,000 people were giving away $50,000 to artists every week. To help get things rolling, I've created the twitter hashtag #5DF. Every week I'll link to the recipient of my five dollars on twitter with that tag, and if you start doing it I encourage you to do the same. (I'll also archive all my recipients here.)

3. In my most grandiose dreams, this idea would—in the process of becoming popular—make people realize that we need a new way to fund all kinds of art. In theory the internet should be a dream come true for artists and people generally, but it will never fulfill its potential if everyone is trying to eke out a living from advertising or just what other people are willing to cough up on the spur of the moment.

There's more at the post, including a mention of Dean Baker's old Artistic Freedom Voucher idea.

The idea appeals, although obviously I am not up for it until I have an income. (i.e. - likely never again)

Of course, in some ways this represents a private, non-centralized Kickstarter project.

I know some people have discussed the idea of a subscription model to pay artists, but I don't know of any sites coordinating that.

Shakil, one of the people here in the job-hunting workshop, just related a story about how a girl in Bangladesh, when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, answered "Corruptionist."

I want this job.
It sounds like GREAT fun.
I might even be good at it.

LC - Professional Corruptionist.

(Of course, those who have known me long enough remember when my sigfile read "Professional Innocent" or "Innocent-for-Hire".)

..is something something.

Of course, I would need to *have* a desk for this to be relevant.

Hope you're all voting for Higgins to get funding.

I remain disappointed people didn't want to comment on the zombies or the mermaids in the earlier post.

The "Evil Bastard Version" of two kids with famous imaginary friends.

Sometimes, you look at the trap and wish you had money to get people sexy boots. (Or were good enough friends with that woman who works at Fluevog that you could get inside info on warehouse markdowns or such.)

I really do need to find a beach and participate in the World Beach Project.

I got to visit Tandberg yesterday and now I really want to become a supervillain so I can issue threats via giant screen to boardrooms around the world. I would need a cat, or perhaps an evil guinea pig.

I have some photos I need to edit and things to do.

Crash space seems to be settled, to the point of even possibly having an apartment short-term, so that might have worked out well.

I am being haunted by the congestive cold that won't go away, though, which is making me feel brutally run down and irritable.

Anyone have a temp agency to recommend here in Montreal, btw?

Also, the penultimate episode of Dollhouse was fun, and I am quite curious to see how he wraps it up in the end.

Nice to have income this week, but reading articles on the rates of PTSD among sex workers in San Francisco, victims of tsunamis and the links between PTSD and substance abuse isn't exactly the kind of thing that puts someone in a good mood.

So it seems the old colleague of mine who Facebooked me asking if I would call her to talk about a project was unaware that I moved back (and was currently 8 blocks away from the cafe she was sitting in).

It is an interesting project, although still a bit in early stages. I am intrigued, though. I may have to poke my psych and BARCC friends about it though.

I also like meetings with professionals in funky cafes. I think it kicks in my general food service thing where everyone becomes cuter.
