Aristophanes would approve.
Apr. 23rd, 2010 09:33 amYes, Comedy as Social Commentary is a millennia-old tradition. Indeed, when Jon Stewart responds to a criticism that it isn't by bringing on a chorus that interacts with him, both criticizing and supporting the protagonists arguments, I cannot help but think he is purposefully tipping his hat to Aristophanes as one of the ancient roots of the great tradition to which Stewart belongs.
But then, what do I know, I'm obviously part of his unsophisticated audience that thinks "F-bombs" are funny.

Last week, Jon Stewart pointed out the hypocrisy of Fox News commentators such as Bernie Goldberg objecting to the stereotypes of the Tea Party in the news while engaging in broad-based demeaning stereotypes of "Liberals". (It's at the tail end of this segment.) In short, Stewart told them (told them *again* in the case of Goldberg personally) to go fuck themselves.
Goldberg responded on the O'Reilly Factor, and told Jon Stewart that if he wanted to be "a social commentator, more than just a comedian", Stewart would need to get some guts.
The above is Stewart's response.
