Calibrating a monitor

lightcastleAnyone know the proper way to calibrate a monitor for colours? I suspect this has something to do with colour management and profiles.
Can anyone point me a proper primer? (Or convince me this is completely irrelevant?) I figure if I am messing with my pictures, I should at least know the colours are accurate.
