Science Roundup!
Dec. 19th, 2009 01:38 pmVarious science stories that caught my eye this week.
- Scientists argue for "survival of the kindest". The start is pretty eye-rolling, but the argument that being generous gives social status and that is why it is selected for is intriguing.
- There is no credible evidence for people having different learning styles. No "visual learner" vs "verbal learner". It's a lit review, and the argument seems to be just that no one has done a good
randomized study. - Women should talk with their gynaecologist or midwife about sex.
- Scientists identify new "golden ratio" for female beauty. This one is "when the vertical distance between their eyes and the mouth was approximately 36 percent of the face's length, and the horizontal distance between their eyes was approximately 46 percent of the face's width." Once again an "average face" hypothesis. (Would it shock you to find out that only white women's faces were studied?)
- As long as we are speaking on attractiveness, Being attractive is more important in the city, where you are in social competition than in rural areas with a smaller, less socially mobile population. Reading the article, it seems this study was only concerned with women.
- Do judge a book by its cover. Self-esteem, ratings of extraversion and religiosity can be correctly judged from physical appearance alone.
