Whirlwinding
At around 10:30 Friday night, I decided to go to Philadelphia to see s00j in what I believed to be her last concert of 2011.
I bundled some things together and grabbed the red eye bus down south.
At 1:30 pm Saturday, I arrived at PhilCon, where I was greeted by shadesong.
At 2pm, I showed up at s00j's autograph table and pointed out I had nothing for her to sign. I do think the look of slight incredulity at my presence was kind of worth it. We determined that I see her in the fall, because that is when my s00j is in alignment. Now we have a story, which means now there are rules.
Her performance, accompanied by the superb Heather Dale, was tremendous.
I then spent the night party hopping to keep awake, smooched the cute geek girl who speaks 5 languages (as you do), and left the hotel at 6:30 am to head back to Montreal, crawling into my apartment at 8pm.
I violated horsetraveller's rule, but sometimes the point is that one did the journey.
Overall, however, PhilCon seemed pretty stale. I did enjoy shooting Jedi, however, and got to kidnap Doctors and make them pose next to the TARDIS corset, so there was definitely fun to be had.

Back from the land of Jaguars.
Well, not the really cool Jaguars, just the Jacksonville kind.
The trip was good and it was certainly nice to have some sun. The actual workshops at the AMWA meeting were a bit hit and miss. I would say that the workshops focused on something practical were the most effective. There just isn't enough time to go big picture.
Jacksonville itself is very large and sprawling, and I barely saw any of it. It's a hardcore football town from what I can gather.
The highlight (other than getting to develop a conference crush, which is always fun) was the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. It's got beautiful greenery, is nicely laid out, and is easy to walk. I got to pet a stingray, feed a giraffe, and get stared at hungrily by a jaguar. (Also, the bonobos and the gorilla are divas who pose for the camera.)
Now I have to gather my receipts, and hope these glasses don't break more before I can get them fixed.

Boston Bound - August 3
Seems I will be sent in for a day trip to Boston again tomorrow. (So much for unpacking from the woods.)
I suspect I will be on the same sort of time scale as last time, so at best a quick snack and chat are on the table.
At least it should give me some time to figure out what to charge for a modeling portfolio.

Boston in a Day - Two out of Three ain't bad
One day in-and-out business trips are kind of ridiculous.
Overall, the day went well - one slight plane delay in the morning.
Sadly, the late start to the meeting and the post-meeting debrief meant I really had no time to see people. I managed a quick chat and falafel with ascikitty, and got home-made gluten-free chocolatines from herbertinc (which were amazing and now if anyone says you can't make gluten-free pastry that is awesome I will deride them as knowing nothing. NOTHING!!!), but was unable to see entrope. :(
Still, it likes like they may send me on a few more of these.

Boston Bound - Wed 20 July
So it seems I will be in Boston on business the 20th of July. More precisely, Cambridge.
Not sure how long the meetings are for and I am flying back that evening, but anyone want to make tentative plans for a fly-by hello?

Strowlercon Bound!
Off to the bus for the midnight run to Boston and then off to the con. I will presumably be reachable by either my throw-away cell or american skype number. I have limited fabulous diva hosting clothes, so hopefully people will help with that.

[Web Help] Reactivating a SIM card
OK, so if I bring this barely used but previously activated Nokia on a T-Mobile pay as you go account back into the USA, can I just call up the "add funds" number and expect it to work or are there other hoops to jump through seeing as I haven't touched it in 7 months?

How to figure out my phone number
I really wish this phone had something in one of the menus that told me what the phone number associated with it was, then it would be useful to bring to the US while in Boston/Cambridge/Somerville
Update: It seems it is in my contacts, as opposed to my settings. Not where I would put it, but there you go.

Travel books
For those of you who like to (and can afford to) travel, there is always some good advice to be found from the Frugal traveler.
Those of you who like to read while traveling, and have made the jump to the Kindle or some other e-book reader might find this discussion on the pricing of e-books interesting. They seem to be basically arguing that e-books have to be more expensive.

The Burlington Dilemma
The horns of a dilemma: Do I get the lens now for about $300 CDN after taxes or do I put an order in and bus down to Burlington in mid-Novemberish when it might have arrived for about $250 US total? (And probably turn it into a weekend Burlington visit, paying for the kindness of holding the lens with a shoot, cooking, or other service rendered?)

Porter Airline comes to Boston
Boston Logan International Airport is airline's third U.S. destination, starting Sept. 14
Just to Toronto, and sadly not in the next month or so, but still, good news.
