[Review] - Doctor Who 5x11 - The Lodger
It sometimes fascinates me what makes me cry these days.
This was terribly sweet as a lead-in episode to the finale and everything going to hell. Of course, while I often complain bitterly about them no longer wandering strange worlds and spending enough time off of Earth, I do so love the episodes where the Doctor comes in and confronts normality.
Here, of course, we have the Doctor stranded as the TARDIS gets bumped into a dematerialization loop and he's forced to rent a flat under the source of the disturbance. In order to not attract the attention of what's causing it, he must "blend in", which includes not weirding out his new flatmate too much.
The episode's charm is driven by the lovely dynamic of The Doctor rooming with a decent bloke who has no real ambition other than winning the heart of his friend Sophie - a heart he's already won, even if neither will admit it to each other yet.
I adored Craig, and his mounting frustration with his bizarre new flatmate. I like that the result of it all was not he and Sophie flying off into another world, just the notion that because their first want was each other, they are now free to look at other things in their lives, knowing that's sorted. It was terribly, terribly sweet - and despite my generally dismal view of humanity and love's chances, I remain a sap for sweet under it all.
The Doctor trying to fit in was great fun, and I like that he's actually kind of a dick. He discovers he's good at football and becomes that selfish prick player who doesn't pass or share with the team. He snaps at the humans occasionally and remains deeply bad at negotiating personal space.
The episode is full of nice little moments and can best be described with that overused-by-me term, "lovely".
Now, as far as the hints for the finale and ties to the season arc...
I have many thoughts on this. Quick and just limited to the episode, I am happy they ended on the ring and the crack.
It has not gone unnoticed that we once again have a perception filter, and something that is not what you think it is when you look at it.
We *again* have images of the Doctor's past incarnations. (There have been MANY this season, mostly of the earliest.)
Pay attention to the Doctor's description of the myth of Who is in the Pandorica. (I think I will write another post on this.)
